GoD & Liberation Reading Group

Photograph of books lined up: The People's Bible, Sisters in the Wilderness, Shalom and the Community of Creation, This Here Flesh, Black Theology & Black Power, The Cross and the Lynching Tree, Called Out & Decolonizing Christianity

The God of Christianity is a God of liberation, with a preferential option for the poor and marginalized. This gets erased when we read theology that is primarily by and for those with the most privilege. Theologies of liberation -- Black Theology, Womanist Theology, Latine Theology, Indigenous Theology, Disability Theology, Queer Theology, EcoTheology and more -- can open up new worlds and new understandings of scripture. Join us as we dive into these theologies so that we might construct ways of thinking about God that are liberating to all creation.

What's the schedule like?

We meet every third Monday at 7pm at St. Mark's Lutheran in Asheville to discuss a reading we have chosen together. Folk are welcome to come in and out as their capacity allows.

We're currently discussing Sisters in the Wilderness by Delores Williams.

You won't have to have read the reading, but it will be helpful!

Who is this for?

This is for anyone interested in learning about the myriad liberation theologies available to expand how we think about God.
